Concrete QC Technician — Level 1

Entry-level to experienced concrete quality control technician supporting field testing, cylinder casting, and lab work on IDOT, City of Chicago, and municipal projects.

What you'll do
  • Cast, cure, and store concrete test cylinders per ASTM C31
  • Break cylinders on a compression testing machine and record results per ASTM C39
  • Perform fresh-concrete tests: slump, air content, temperature, and unit weight
  • Maintain accurate field logs, sample records, and daily reports
  • Coordinate with batch plants and inspectors during concrete pours
  • Maintain and assist with calibration of testing equipment
  • Follow all jobsite safety and PPE requirements
Required
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Willingness to learn cylinder breaking and field testing — we will train you
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and work outdoors in all weather
  • Reliable transportation to project sites across the Chicago metro area
  • Strong attention to detail and accurate recordkeeping
Preferred
  • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I (or in progress)
  • PCC Level 1 – Portland Cement Concrete Technician certification (or in progress)
  • Hands-on experience breaking cylinders and operating a compression machine
  • Familiarity with ASTM C31, C39, C143, C231, C1064
  • Prior experience on IDOT or City of Chicago construction projects

Senior Concrete QC Technician / QC Manager — Level 2

Senior leadership role responsible for overseeing all quality-control activities on Zenith's concrete and civil projects — owning the QC plan, mentoring Level 1 techs, and serving as primary inspector liaison.

What you'll do
  • Develop, implement, and maintain the project Quality Control Plan (QCP)
  • Oversee and direct Level 1 technicians in field and lab testing activities
  • Perform and supervise concrete testing: fresh properties, cylinder fabrication, and compression breaking
  • Review and approve test reports, inspection logs, and material submittals
  • Serve as primary liaison with IDOT, CDOT, and owner inspectors on QC matters
  • Ensure compliance with project specifications, IDOT Standard Specifications, and ASTM standards
  • Manage equipment calibration schedules and lab readiness
  • Identify nonconformances, initiate corrective actions, and document resolutions
  • Support estimating and business development by demonstrating QC capabilities
Required
  • 3+ years of concrete QC testing experience on commercial or civil projects
  • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I (current, valid certification)
  • PCC Level 1 – Portland Cement Concrete Technician certification (required prerequisite)
  • Demonstrated experience breaking concrete cylinders and interpreting compressive strength results
  • Strong working knowledge of ASTM C31, C39, C143, C231, C1064, and related standards
  • Ability to read construction drawings, specifications, and mix designs
  • Strong written and verbal communication for reporting and inspector coordination
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
Preferred
  • PCC Level 2 – Portland Cement Concrete Technician (advanced certification)
  • ACI Concrete Strength Testing Technician
  • ACI Concrete Construction Inspector or higher-level ACI certification
  • IDOT Documentation of Contract Quantities (DCQ)
  • IDOT Materials Sampling & Testing certifications (concrete, soils, or aggregate)
  • Experience on IDOT or City of Chicago-funded projects
  • Familiarity with LCPtracker, certified payroll, or prevailing wage compliance
  • Associate's or Bachelor's in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or related field
  • Experience writing or maintaining a formal Quality Control Plan

Fleet & Yard Manager

Hands-on day-to-day operations of Zenith's yard, vehicle fleet, and field material inventory. Coordinates deliveries, supervises a small yard crew, and handles purchasing and quoting.

What you'll do
  • Oversee maintenance schedule for all company vehicles, trucks, and equipment
  • Coordinate routine service, repairs, and inspections with mechanics and vendors
  • Track vehicle registrations, insurance documents, and DOT compliance records
  • Monitor fuel usage, mileage logs, and vehicle condition reports
  • Maintain organized inventory of perishable and non-perishable construction materials
  • Track stock of dowel bars, rebar, curing compound, lumber, and forming supplies
  • Receive and verify incoming deliveries against purchase orders
  • Request quotes, compare vendor pricing, and issue purchase orders
  • Build and maintain relationships with key suppliers
  • Supervise a small yard crew (laborers, drivers, material handlers)
  • Assign daily tasks and ensure yard team follows safety and organizational standards
Required
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Comfortable working outdoors in a yard/field environment year-round
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform hands-on physical tasks
  • Reliable transportation and valid driver's license
  • Basic computer or smartphone skills for inventory logging and office communication
  • Dependable, self-motivated, and able to take ownership without constant supervision
Preferred
  • Prior experience in construction yard operations, fleet coordination, or warehouse/logistics
  • Familiarity with rebar, dowel bars, lumber, curing compound, or concrete accessories
  • Experience requesting quotes, issuing purchase orders, or managing vendor relationships
  • Experience supervising or leading a small team
  • Knowledge of vehicle maintenance scheduling or fleet tracking systems
  • CDL (any class) or experience operating forklifts, skid steers, or other yard equipment
  • Experience with inventory management software or construction ERP (Sage, Procore, etc.)
